Another successful Beer & Cheese night this past Tuesday with a very special guest - Christian Andersen from Beer Here (Denmark). Christian was in town for a week as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and thanks to Adam Betts from Northdown Craft Beer Movement we secured him and his delicious beers for our tasting night. Christian entertained us with his brewing stories and the ideas behind his controversial labels. Delicious cheese pairings were organised by Ashley Church from Cheese Culture. A great night was had by all - we can't wait for the next one!

If another Cheese and Beer Tasting wasn't already exciting enough, we have just been given the good news that Christian Andersen, of Beer Here brewery in Denmark will be coming down to showcase his wonderful range of craft beer alongside some fantastic cheeses from all over the world.

The line up is yet to be finalised (don't worry though, Ashley and I will work tirelessly matching delicious cheese to Christians broad and awesome range of beers - it's tough work, but someone has got to do it), however, those who would like to ensure their spot can book here.

The Cheese and Beer evening will be held on Tuesday, 6th of March 2012 at The Local BottleStore & Provisions starting at 6.30pm sharp.

Green Flash and Bear Republic have finally hit our shores.

From Green Flash we have West Coast IPA, Hop Head Red Ale, Le Freak, Imperial IPA, Double Stout and Barley Wine.

Epic Larger - Imperial Pilsener 8.5% - Larger, get it, like lager, but bigger, and using a common misspelling....... it's a pun!

Epic Fig and Coffee Imperial Oatmeal Stout - Imperial Stout 8% - Brewed with foodies in mind, those of you who read.... Epic-cure.

Epic Barrel Aged Armageddon - India Pale Ale 7.25% - So earth shatteringly hoppy, it had to be locked in a barrel.

Epic Flying Nun 30th Anniversary Beer - American Pale Ale 5.5% - Since the arrival of the first Gramophone to New Zealand in 1981 Flying Nun have been pumping out records - in honour of this, Epic have brewed a super hoppy pale ale.

Red Hill Brewery Tasting this Thursday

To coincide with the long awaited Red Hill Brewery Tap Makeover, Karen and Dave Golding from Red Hill Brewery will be on hand this Thursday at The Local BottleStore & Provisions.

Starting from 5pm, their wonderful range of craft ales will be on show, for free. No booking is required, just show up and try some wonderful ales (and maybe some cheese).

New Store Manager wanted. And what a time to take the reins... read on!

The founding LB&P manager, James Smith, is heading back to university to complete his studies (which were interrupted when he began working at The Local Taphouse almost four years ago!). Fortunately for us, James will still be involved on a casual basis with beery stuff across all the businesses.

So we're now looking for a new full-time Store manager!

What's make this especially exciting is that the successful candidate will be joining at a very exciting time as we proceed with the planned second stage of the Store's development.

Over the next few months, we will be significantly increasing the "provisions" element of the Store. We will still provide all the great things we offer now but we will be ramping up the gourmet food store/providore side so it becomes a more complete eating and drinking destination in the neighbourhood.

The Taphouse's new Head Chef, Jeff Simpson (ex Sapore, Richmond Hill & Larder) is joining us in a couple of weeks to create many delectable delights to complement all the other new foodie items we will be cramming the shelves with.

We will also be extending our already impressive bottled beer and cider range AND increasing the number of growler/squealer taps over time.

But wait, there's more! Subject to permits and licensing applications being finalised, customers will soon be able to drink any bottle of any beer/wine/cider on the shelf or fridge and enjoy something to eat while seated in the Store.

Cheese and Beer Night Wrap up

On Wednesday 23rd of November, 30 people crammed in to The Local BottleStore & Provisions for our 2nd Cheese and Beer evening.

Ashley Church from The Smelly Cheese Club was on hand to lead patrons through the wonderful world of cheese, and John Cope Williams of Better Beer Imports took us through a selection of his wonderful range.

With 7 cheeses matched to 7 beers, Ashley got the evening started by telling us about the first cheese - Herve Mons Ossau Iraty AOC, a delicious ewe's milk cheese that went perfectly with Bridge Road Brewers Chestnut Pilsener.

Next up was Herve Mons Camembert matched with Bridge Road Chevalier Saison, the spritzy ester saison cut through the fatty, pungent Camembert cleansing the pallet leaving you wanting more.

Following the Camember we were treated to Tomme du Chevre du Poitou matched with Bridge Road Beer de Garde, then Luigi Guffanti Gorgonzola Dolce matche with Epic Barrel aged Stout. Another Cheese from Herve Mons was next - Herve Mons Meule de Savoie, a lovely delicately fruity hard cheese from the Alpine regions of France matched with 8 Wired Sauvin Saison.

We rounded out the evening with Prefere de nos Montagnes matched with Tuatara Ardennes, and perhaps the most polarising of all, Quickes Oak Smoke Cheddar matched with 8 Wired Rewired Brown ale.

A huge thanks to Ashley, John, Nitun, Rick and all our wonderful customers who came along for a great evening of Cheese and Beer matching.

Cheese and Beer, what else do you need to know? On Wednesday 23rd of November we will be holding our 2nd Cheese and Beer tasting.

Ashley Church from Cheese Culture will be on hand for the cheese side, and John Cope Williams of Better Beer Imports will be taking us through some awesome beers from breweries such as Epic, 8 Wired and Bridge Road Brewers.

We will be matching 6 beers with 6 cheeses from around the world.

Start time is 6.30pm, on Wednesday 23/11.

Well its brewed by Bridge Road Brewers of Beechworth, which is a spooky looking Gold Rush town that amongst other things (including an Asylum and a creepy old prison) is near where the Kelly gang had their last stand. In my book that's Spooky.

A few days late, but definitely worth the wait, Little Creatures new brew from their Single Batch range, The Big Dipper DIPA (Double India Pale Ale) is here.

A huge hop bomb, here what the guys from Little Creatures had to say about it;

We just can't help it. We're addicted to fresh hops. So, it's no surprise that for our next Single Batch release we couldn't wait to make a massive hop fueled double IPA.... The Big Dipper.
When 215kg of fresh hops arrived at the brewery it took us all a little while to collect ourselves. Columbus, Cascade, Chinook, Stella, Centennial, Citra and Simcoe...mmmm.... we were like a bunch of kids in a hop flavoured candy store! (which on second thoughts and for anyone who's been sipping on wort lately probably wouldn't be all that delicious but let's not let the truth get in the way of a good story)
We've thrown a heap of these hops at this beer throughout the brewing process to create a big, double IPA full of flavour. Of course it didn't take long till we started calling it the Big DIPA and when we realised there were seven stars in the constellation and seven hop varieties going into this bad boy the name just stuck.
As for the technical stuff it's about the biggest charge of hops ever seen in the Creatures brewhouse and has ended up with an IBU of 55, a EBC of 24 and a massive alcohol percentage of 7.8%. One for the true hopheads for sure.

Delicious sounding right? Just one batch, so, get it while it lasts.

The inaugural LBS&P Cheese & Beer evening.

On a pleasant spring evening last Wednesday, a group of 27 squeezed into The Local BottleStore & Provisions, for the 1st (of many more) Cheese & Beer tasting.

There were 5 excellent cheese's, with beery matches. Ashley Church from Adelaide's Cheese Culture (Who run the the terrific Smelly Cheese shop in Adelaide's Central Market) was our guide for the evening.

We were all taken through the basics of Cheese tasting and terminology, and then it was time for some tasting.

First up was the Fromage De Meaux (France) matched with Boon Gueze Mariage Parfait. A fairly in your face match to get everyone into it, with the sour citrusy geueze cutting through the rich, savoury French cheese.

Up next was the Chimay a la Biere matched with none other than Chimay Rouge Dubbel. A few of us found that the Chimay beer matched well with the Chimay cheese, but not with the rind.

Our third cheese was the Luigi Guffanti Taleggio matched with 32 dei Birra Curmi. Ashley explained that despite having Luigi Guffanti name on the Cheese, it was not made by them. The people at Luigi Guffanti are affineurs, which means they age the cheese.

The penultimate match was Fullers IPA with Quickes 18 month Cloth Cheddar. The cheddar was creamy and earthy, which was complimented by the peppery hops of the Fullers IPA.

What beer and cheese evening would be complete without a desert matching, in our case Colston Basset Stilton matched with Beer Here Yule wine. The sherry like notes of the barley-wine went perfectly with the sweet creamy flavours of the Stilton.

A great evening was had by all (how could you not enjoy beer and cheese). A huge thanks to Ashley, who was a great and informative host, to everyone who came along and made it an excellent evening, and to the Staff (Nitun and Rick) who made sure all the cheese and beer came out on time.

So, a saison yeast, heaps of hops and plenty of malt later, the guys from Yeastie Boys, 8 Wired and Renaissance came out with a charitable offering that is also a beer - Rescue Red Ale.

$170 per keg will be donated to The Premier's Flood Relief fund by the importer Innspire.

Rescue Red Ale is a 4.8% red Saison. Growler fills will be $29.50 but get in quick as we have just just one keg!

Winner in Growler Launch competition

'Lucky' Lachlan Toose is the winner of our competition to create an original story of how beer growlers got their name.

The prize is that Ben Kraus, brewer at Bridge Road Brewery, will officially launch our home delivery service tomorrow night by filling a growler with his new Anniversary Ale (Black Saison) and then delivering it on our vintage delivery bicycle to Lachlan at his nearby home.

For the record, this is Lachlan's imaginative story:

etymology; In 1837, a retired Scottish fisherman used to walk to a different pub each night with his rabid dog. He would demand they fill up an old gallon bucket he carried with beer or he would sick his dog on them. He would drink half the beer there, and leave with the rest. This soon became local legend, and as he would leave, the patrons would call after him, "There goes Paddy with his Growler"

No Sleep Till Brooklyn!

The rumours were true, a craft brewing legend had arrived on our shores.

In a year that has already seen such landmark breweries as Sierra Nevada (USA) and North Coast Brewing (USA) become legitimately available on our shores, even a beer nerd such as myself was feeling rather satisfied.

But to balance out all that West Coast action, Brooklyn Brewery, home to the world famous Brooklyn Lager amongst others, is now available.

Brewed by beery celebrity Garrett Oliver in Brooklyn, New York, they are now for sale, right here in East St.Kilda .

To begin with we will be stocking Brooklyn Lager and Brooklyn Local 1 (Belgian Strong Golden Ale), but soon hope to have access to more of their range.

Brooklyn Lager $4 (355ml) each ($21.60 per six pack) and Local 1 (750ml) $22.10 each.

Please remember the price is for the beer only. The growler itself is a one-off cost of just $15.

Growler fillers named after Steve and Guy's first born children!

With growlers now available for sale, we last week christened the growler fillers after Steve and Guy's first born children. From this day forth, they will be known as Hank and Frankie.

The families gathered last week for the naming ceremony. In the photo above of the growler fillers,Steve is pictured on the left with Henry (aka Hank) and Guy with his daughter Frankie.

It was certainly a proud day!

Bridge Road brewer to personally deliver beer growler to launch our bicycle deliveries!

Ben Kraus, owner and brewer at Bridge Road Brewery and an avid cyclist, will officially launch our home delivery service on Tuesday July 19th at 6pm.

Before his appearance at the Ale Star's 3rd birthday celebrations at the Taphouse, Ben will fill a growler with his own forthcoming Anniversary Ale and then personally ride our vintage delivery bicycle (similar to the one photographed above) to deliver the growler to our competition winner at his/her home.

If you would like Ben to personally deliver to your home a free growler of his Anniversary Black Saison, make up your own imaginative, original and clean (!) story – in 100 words or less - as to how beer growlers were given their name. Email them to bottlestoreSK AT thelocal.com.au by midnight July 15th. To be eligible for the delivery, you must live within 3km of the St Kilda Taphouse (use Google maps if you're not sure) and be home from 6pm-7pm on the 19th. We'll also find a fun prize for the best answer from a non-local!

We will announce the winner on Sunday July 17th.

More information about deliveries such as days, times, costs etc will be posted soon.

Growler fills not so far away.

While we will open for business next week (exact day TBC), we will wait a few weeks to iron out the bugs before launching our growler fills. We will be starting off with two rotating beers but have plumbed for 6 and can further expand up to 40 beers in the future. Needless to say, the beers will be top notch and we will usually ensure one is a sessionable drop under 5% ABV. Fill prices will obviously depend on the beer.

After considerable research, we have imported our dispensers from Europe. They use the same counter-pressure filling method found in large beer bottling factories. While it's always best to drink fresh, this counter-pressure filling method will ensure the beer will keep much better for much longer in the fridge until opened.

We will happily fill ALL 1.89 litre regular growlers from other bottle shops/breweries but those who have bought, or are re-using, a BottleStore growler will get a discount. We will have a swap-and-go fridge for those in a hurry and BottleStore koozies will also be sold to carry your growler in!

Growler Bike deliveries to our neighbourhood will also be launched in the not-so-distant future..

I don't think there is a sexier beer glass than these ones shown above.

We wanted to use them for the Taphouses but they are too delicate for that use. But they are PERFECT for drinking good beer at home.
